MADISON, Wis. -

A Madison woman nearly made a payment to a scammer who told her she won $2.5 million and a car, according to police.

The 62-year-old victim told police "Mr. David Washington" from "Cash Prize Resources" had called to tell her about her prizes. He told her she needed to pay $2,500 to process the winnings.

The woman said when she went to the bank and told the teller about the prize, the teller told her it was a scam.

An officer was at the woman’s home when the man called back and told the man to leave the woman alone.

Police said the woman provided the man with some personal information before learning the call was a scam.
