Police said a brazen thief was busted by the victim as he was walking in a downtown law office carrying her stolen computer.
The Madison Police Department said a 24-year-old employee of Axley law firm on East Mifflin Street was walking back to her office from a meeting Tuesday morning when she saw a man carrying multiple items.
The laptop, iPhone and makeup bag Adrian D. Jamison, 21, of Madison, was holding belonged to her, police said.
Police said the victim confronted the man saying he had her things, and he told her another man had dropped the items and he was returning them.
Another laptop was found in Jamison's possession, which he said he bought; however, he wasn't familiar with the video and calling software, Skype, used by the computer owner.
Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain said the laptop belonged to a 76-year-old woman -- who does use Skype -- and has an office down the block from Axley.
Another Axley staffer told police she saw Jamison in the building a couple weeks ago, and Jamison told her he was looking for an employment agency.
"Officers believe he was likely casing the place in the run up to (the) crime," DeSpain said.
Police said property belonging to other people was also found in Jamison's possession, including a VISA card belonging to a 20-year-old man. The card had been stolen from the 20-year-old's backpack on a Madison Metro bus in October.
Police connected surveillance video of from the bus theft to Jamison, the report said.
Jamison was charged with felony theft, theft, attempt to commit theft, resisting and on a probation hold.
