If there is one area of general agreement on a community response to the Race to Equity report, it's the need to move quickly to measurable metrics of change.

If there is one area of general agreement on a community response to the Race to Equity report - and it’s getting to the point where there are many areas of general agreement - it is the need to move quickly to measurable metrics of change.

We need more kids of color achieving in school, more employment and income growth for Black and Latino families, and fewer Black men in the prison system. Disparity is measurable. So must be equity.

To their credit, members of the so-called Justified Anger Coalition organized by Pastor Alex Gee and others have recognized resources are needed to move from talk to action in addressing racial disparities and Wednesday morning they set forth a plan. Thanks to a hundred thousand dollars in gifts from the Madison Community Foundation, CUNA Mutual Foundation, MG&E Foundation, Evjue Foundation, city and county, the coalition will have a structure, a staff and five strategic priorities.

And coalition members are standing behind the plan and promising results.

Most important, one of the priorities is a scorecard. It’s time. We need to hold ourselves accountable for the equity we seek.
