When editorial boards around Wisconsin began a collaborative effort to persuade Republican leaders in the state legislature to hold hearings on bills to reform the state’s broken redistricting system it included at least a modicum of so much tilting at windmills. But lo and behold the public is responding and pressure is building.
A Wisconsin Center for Investigative Journalism examination of email records for some of those legislative leaders showed hundreds of contacts by citizens and nearly all backed hearings on the reform bills. Not that those leaders showed any interest in responding to those citizen contacts to say nothing of scheduling hearings. But sooner or later citizen action will amount to a genuine threat at the ballot box and then we might see some action.
That may be giving legislative leaders too much credit. But one can hope. One can also contact’s one legislator and add one’s voice to the growing chorus calling for good government. We urge you to do so.
