WISC EDITORIAL AGENDA 2013 - OUR CLIMATE - ANOTHER LINE CROSSED

05/13/13

Late last week our world experienced a dubious milestone with very troubling ramifications. Scientists say that a measurement of the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere reached 400 parts per million. There are a lot of ways of looking at this, but the most dramatic may be that the earth reached 300 parts per million in 1915 for the first time in at least three million years. It took less than 100 years to reach 400.

Unfortunately we still have to begin our understanding of all this with the statement that climate change is a scientific fact. Too many people, including way too may politicians, continue to deny this for political reasons. As they sit on their hands our environment degrades and continues to warm. If nothing is done we will reach disastrous levels of CO2 and warmth this century.

This all requires a global response, unprecedented citizen action and political will. The numbers are staring us in the face.
