MADISON, Wis. -

West Dayton Street will continue to be closed for an underground utility project through May 15, officials said.

Unforeseen underground utility conflicts will extend excavation work in the 400 block of West Dayton Street an extra week, city officials said. The project was originally supposed to end Thursday.

Speedway Sand and Gravel is excavating West Dayton Street to install utilities for the Domain project, according to a release.

Through traffic between North Bassett and North Broom streets will continue to be closed daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., officials said. Single-lane emergency vehicle access will be maintained after work hours and over the weekend.

Local access to residences will be maintained during the closure, officials said. Trash and recycling collection and mail delivery will not be affected.

Pedestrian traffic will be maintained on the south side of West Dayton Street and to all residences at all times during the closure, according to the release.

Officials encourage motorists and bicyclists to use alternate routes to avoid delays during the closure.
