DENVER -

A tornado touched down briefly over runways at Denver International Airport on Tuesday afternoon, The Associated Press reported.

The wire service reported that thousands in the airport were forced to shelter in bathrooms and stairwells until a tornado warning passed.

There were no immediate reports of damage, the AP said.

NWS meteorologist Kyle Fredin told the AP that a 97 mph gust was measured at the airport during the storm.

Some flights headed to Denver had to be diverted to other airports, the wire service reported.
