ELKHORN, Wis. -

Wisconsin emergency officials said the state has caught a break in the weather, as a storm system that threatened Wisconsin lakes and streams is veering southward into Illinois.

Tod Pritchard of Wisconsin Emergency Management said officials were bracing for as much as 4 inches of rain Thursday in the southern part of the state. He said the new forecast calls for about half of that or less.

He said counties aren't relaxing quite yet, though; they're tracking the latest forecasts and officials in Rock County have requested 50,000 sandbags to protect against flooding of the Rock River.

A handful of roads have closed in Milwaukee County.

In Walworth County, West Side Elementary School of Elkhorn was closed because flooding because of problems with its sewer system.
