We Can Do It

The continuing subtle – or perhaps not so subtle – shift in direction and focus in the community-based public education discussion of the achievement gap was evident to us at this week’s Foundation for Madison Public Schools Circle of Friends luncheon.

First of all more than 700 friends of Madison’s public schools saw first hand how the endowments now supporting every school in the district are enhancing student achievement and enriching student learning. From spoken word projects to school music and video projects the creativity on display was remarkable.

But the luncheon also featured the announcement of one-point-two Million dollar We Can Do It grants to Sandburg and Thoreau elementary schools to accelerate and support current efforts to improve student achievement. Thank you Mary Burke. Enough said. And the focused efforts to close the gap grow, school by school and kid by kid.
