The Waisman Center, on the UW Madison campus, is one of Madison’s greatest assets.

Founded 40 years ago to advance knowledge about human development, development disabilities and neurodegenerative disease, the Waisman Center is a world leader on research on the human brain. But it is so much more.

It is a place where scientists, educators, clinicians, families and children seek treatments and cures for developmental disabilities. Given that one in six children have a developmental disability, like autism, means the Wasiman Center and the work done there is at the epicenter of 21st century health work.

That’s what prompts director Marsha Mailick to call the Center “part of the resources of the City of Madison for this segment of our community,” and “the focal point of expertise on developmental disease in our community.”

Thursday is the 40th anniversary dinner, celebrating the past and future of the Waisman Center. Both are immeasurable contributions to Madison and its families.
