RIDGEWAY – Virginia Jean Harris, age 87, passed away peacefully to her Heavenly reward on Saturday, May 10, 2014, surrounded by her loving family.

Virginia was born on Nov. 28, 1926, in Vermillion, SD. She was the 7th of 8 children born to Judge William A. Bauman (Judge, Attorney, and Postmaster) and Johanna F. (Hofland) Bauman. She was valedictorian of her senior class, a member of Theta Rho, and played trumpet in the band.

In 1946, Virginia married Douglas E. Harris of Mineral Point, WI. They later divorced. She is survived by her 6 children: Regina Lisi, Monona, David (Janine) Harris, Belleville, Daniel (Janet Rother-Harris) Harris, Middleton, Charlene (Robert) Parks, Monona, Donald (Tammy) Harris, Glendale, AZ, and Dale (Jennifer) Harris, Ridgeway, her 14 grandchildren, and many great and great-great grandchildren. She is also survived by her 2 sisters: JoEva Schaefer, Sun City, AZ, and Roberta Jockheck, Redfield, SD, and many nieces and nephews across the country.

Virginia was preceded in death by her parents and 5 brothers and sisters (and their spouses): Carl L. Bauman, Doris Anderson, Ruth Fueston, William H. Bauman, and George Bauman (at age 12).

For 28 years, from 1968 – 1996, she was a devoted legal secretary and bookkeeper for the Madison Law Firm of Attorney Robert (Toby) Reynolds, Jr. and later Attorneys Peckham, Sieker, Mathews, Flesch, Herrick, Kasdorf, Dymzrov, Vetzner, and Buffet.

Virginia loved God and lived a life of faith. She was an active member of the Lake Edge United Church of Christ from 1963 – 1985, and was a deacon, and member of the choir. She lived on E. Dean Ave., Madison, for 45 years. In 2000, she moved to Ridgeway, WI to live with her son Dale and his family. There she lived a peaceful, quiet life in the country. She enjoyed walking, watching the wildlife, reading, listening to music, and doing her daily crossword puzzles.

Virginia faced many challenges in life but always kept a positive, can-do attitude. She worked diligently to care and provide for her children. She was a loving and devoted mother who was the only parent in their lives after the divorce. With the help of family and friends she overcame the odds and raised a beautiful, thriving family. She was genuinely interested in the details of each of her children’s lives. She instilled faith, kindness, respect and appreciation of all things beautiful to her children. She was a mother who was deserving of the greatest respect and admiration. Our family thanks God for the precious gift of her life, and we love her and will miss her greatly.

There will be a private family memorial service at a later date.
