Yesterday’s editorial prompted more than the usual number of replies. Most were not happy with our position on Congressional gridlock on the debt ceiling and government shutdown.
Michael Jensen of Madison writes, "Is it not true that Senate Majority Leader Reid has not brought any of the recent spending bills passed in the House of Representatives that would avoid the government shutdown to a vote in the Senate? The answer of course is yes. Couldn't one make the argument that Senate Majority Leader Reid is guilty of the exact same charge that you make against Speaker Boehner?”
Becky Reller sent us a very thoughtful email, including this: “I was deeply offended by your editorial… and your insistence that it is only the Republicans causing the government shut down. Did you hit a raw nerve? You bet you did. More than that, you really disappointed me.”
And Lee Ferderer adds: “You are completely wrong in your assertion that the law has been debated for years. This law was never debated. It was shoved down America's throat with absolutely zero Republican support using budgetary rules rather than regular order in the Senate.”
We are always very appreciative for your responses. Thank you.
