Published On: May 11 2013 04:41:07 PM CDT

On Friday, May 10, 2013, Verna Joy Marshall, known to most as Joy, died gracefully and peacefully at Agrace Hospice in Fitchburg from surgery complications.

She was born October 20, 1927 at home in Buena Vista Township, the daughter of Beauford and Beulah Cowling. Joy was united in marriage with George Marshall September 5, 1948, and her loving care allowed George to remain at home the past few years. In addition to being a supportive farm wife, Joy worked at the Farmer’s and Merchant's Bank and then worked as a Postmaster replacement at Gillingham for approximately 27 years. She enjoyed her family, cooking and providing all with treats. Joy was a member of Homemakers for many years and enjoyed Homemaker trips, Eastern Star (50+ years), and attending Badger EX-POW gatherings. She was an active member of the Peace United Methodist Church. Her favorite hobby was her grandchildren.

Survived by her husband, of 64 1/2 years, George; her sister Verla Pauls; her brother Vernon (Jack) Cowling (Charlene); three sons: Mike (Robyn), Chuck, Kent (Diana); six grandchildren: Jessica Mannel (Robert), Jason, Lydia Biba (Timothy), Cole, Casey (Ashli), Nick (Kelsey); and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Joy was preceded in death by her parents and her brother-in-law Archie Pauls.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at the PRATT MEMORIAL CHAPEL. Pastor Bill Busch will officiate and burial will be in the Fancy Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be at the PRATT MEMORIAL CHAPEL on Monday, May 13, 2013 from 4:00 PM until 8:00 PM and on Tuesday morning from 10:00 AM until service time at 11:00.

The family suggests memorials be directed to the American Legion Flag Park, to the Peace United Methodist Church, to Agrace HospiceCare, or to a charity of choice in memory of Joy.

The Pratt Funeral and Cremation Service is assisting the Marshall family. Online condolences may be made at prattfuneralservice.com.
