University of Wisconsin-Whitewater officials suspended a wrestling coach Tuesday amidst a police investigation involving a team recruit.

WHITEWATER, Wis. -

University of Wisconsin-Whitewater officials suspended a wrestling coach Tuesday amidst a police investigation involving a team recruit.

Chancellor Richard Telfer said he put head wrestling coach Tim Fader on paid administrative suspension Tuesday. On Monday, the Whitewater Police Department notified Telfer it is investigating an incident with an adult-aged recruit.

Telfer also immediately suspended all wrestling recruitment activities. In a public announcement on the university’s website, Telfer said he’s concerned about the circumstances and the possibility that NCAA rules and university policies may have been violated.

Enrollment Management and the Center for Students with Disabilities are also conducting an internal investigation into the recruitment practices for wrestling.

UWW senior and Inter-Collegiate Athletic Department employee Andrew Minster knows student-athletes and coaches, particularly Fader.

“He aims for the championship every year,” Minster said. “In the wrestling room, it’s basically national championship or bust.”

Fader has led the Warhawks to their highest finish, and in 2012, the National Wrestling Coaches Association named him the coach of the year.

"It's a shock for me because I know how good our athletic department is here and how much it likes to stay clean with stuff," Minster said. "It's a shock to see a coach get suspended, and I'm wondering what the main reason for it is."

UWW officials refused to answer questions beyond what the Chancellor posted online. While Whitewater police would only say "quite a few people are involved" and the investigation would take a long time.

Whitewater police clarified Thursday morning saying Fader is not the focus of the investigation.

News 3 spoke directly with Fader, but he also declined to comment on his suspension.
