MADISON, Wis. -

Former Madison Police Chief Noble Wray will be the new interim leader of the Urban League of Greater Madison.

The announcement was made during a news conference Friday afternoon.

Wray said he plans to start Wednesday. He said he would serve for about six months and would not be the permanent president.

Wray said he has several goals, including ensuring fiscal stability and delivering on core expectations.

Kaleem Caire announced his resignation March 3, but he and the Urban League said it didn’t have to do with concerns about how Caire used the nonprofit’s credit cards.

Urban League’s Chairman Wade Harrison said Caire didn’t do anything illegal, but he did make mistakes. Harrison wouldn’t elaborate, saying the human resources matter was being handled internally.

Caire was president and CEO of the Urban League for four years. His most notable fight might have been for a charter school geared toward minority students that the city’s school board voted down in 2011.

His last day is March 31.

Caire was not in attendance during Friday's announcement.
