MADISON, Wis. -

Two drivers working for taxi providers Uber and Lyft have been cited by Madison police for violating city ordinances, according to a release from Madison police.

Police said the city attorney has determined the unregulated taxi providers are operating illegally and need to follow city ordinances.

"It's not something we're doing on a regular basis or committing a lot of resources to the cause, but we did have two separate operations involving just a couple officers this weekend, and the results of that was two drivers being cited," Madison police spokesman Joel DeSpain said.

On Friday, a plain-clothed police officer used Uber and was charged $14.35 for a ride from Odana Road to North Lake Street.

On Saturday, a different officer also wearing plain clothes used Lyft to get a ride from the 2400 block of University Avenue to the Dane County Regional Airport and was charged $17.

The companies’ arrival in Madison has spurred a debate between traditional cab services and unregulated services that use apps to connect riders to nearby drivers.

Opponents say unregulated cab companies can lead to problems like discrimination, but those embracing the new service said it offers competitively priced rates at the touch of a button.
