Catherine Morland, like many others, said it sounded like a freight train down Tamarack Way.
“I've never in my life heard anything like that. Ever,” Morland said.
Monday night’s EF3 tornado destroyed Morland’s garage. Her home is one of 19 houses police say are too dangerous to live in.
Luckily, Morland’s daughter and her family live down the street. Their house only had minor damage. Morland’s grandson Sean Happel said he could barely hear anything over the estimated 140 mph winds, and he was worried his grandmother wouldn’t either.
“There were tears. It was rough,” Happel said. “Everyone just asked if everyone else is OK, so people have become very neighborly in a situation like this, and that's good.”
Police allowed those displaced from eight of the uninhabitable homes to go in and collect some personal belongings Tuesday. Morland was able to do that and said she expects to be back in her home in the coming week.
“I was so happy that we were OK. That was really the main thing,” Morland said.
