The Chief Resigns

Given the short window of time from the two officer involved shootings, including the still controversial killing of Paulie Heenan, reflecting on the motivation of Madison Police Chief Noble Wray’s announcement of his retirement is unavoidable. But given the Chief plans to stay on the job for at least the next couple of months, with plenty of opportunities for interviews, we’re confident the final analysis of his nine years as chief, and his 30 years with the Madison Police Department will ultimately portray the breadth and significance of his legacy.

For now, Chief Wray’s explanation of why now, with his wife and sons standing behind him, is all we need. It was a family decision made more than a year back. Recent events only delayed the Chief’s announcement. More important, the emotion the passion and the heartfelt sincerity of Wray’s remarks were both a response to his critics and statement of pride in his department, its accomplishments, the men and women in this department, and the people of Madison.

Again, the timing may not seem perfect. But watching Chief Wray make the announcement, with his family and close fellow civic leaders beside him, perhaps it is.
