MADISON -

Madison West softball is our Prep Mania Team of the Month.

The Regents may not win a state championship this season, but they've accomplished a lot in the first few weeks of the high school softball season.

For almost three years, the Regents hadn't won a game - a 56-game losing streak.

But two weeks ago, West defeated Sun Prairie to end that streak, then followed it up with another win against Big Eight power Madison Memorial the week after that.

"It was a relief for the young ladies because it was like carrying a giant monster on their back that they couldn't shake," said West head coach Jocelyn Lepinski. "For all of us, it was just that we could let it go and move forward."

Now, the Regents want to keep building on that success.

"I want to give us a better reputation than we've had in the past and I really think it's part of our responsibility," said junior pitcher Fiona Statz.

Junior catcher Brooke Varian wants "to keep our positivity up if we're ever down again and try to go somewhere with this conference and try to not be the bottom anymore."
