JANESVILLE, Wis. -

A Janesville teacher resigned a month after she was accused of being drunk on a school field trip, officials said.

Fourth-grade instructor Maria Caya was taken to the hospital June 6 after police said she passed out during an outing with students to a local bowling alley.

The School District of Janesville said Wednesday that it accepted 50-year-old Caya's resignation from her position at Washington Elementary School effective Tuesday.

Caya, who had 14 years of local teaching experience, resigned for a job that stood to pay her a $60,644 salary and more than $31,000 in benefits in 2013, according to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

In a statement, the district said it respected her decision to leave and wished her the best.

Brett Berg, spokesperson with the Janesville School District, said the resignation came without the district having begun its own investigation into the incident.

Berg said the police report was finalized two weeks ago but the district hadn’t been able to begin its probe because of summer vacations.

Speaking on his wife's behalf on June 12, Steve Caya said in a statement that "Maria regrets beyond words what occurred."

On June 14, Janesville police said Caya would not face criminal charges in the incident. A police report alleged Caya's blood alcohol level was 0.27 percent at noon the day of the trip.

Caya was one of eight district employees on the field trip, officials said.
