Storm damage at Country View elementary in Verona

VERONA, Wis. -

Verona School District officials estimate damage caused by Monday night’s severe weather at Country View Elementary School to be in the $3 million to $4 million dollar range, according to a release.

Four rooms sustained significant damage and are still open to the elements, officials said. Those rooms will need to be completely rebuilt.

Crews have started clearing debris from the parking lot, grounds and the interior of the school, but a perimeter has been set up as significant debris is still wide spread, according to the release. Power has been restored to most of the building, air handlers are being turned back on and crews have started to dehumidify the school.

Officials said they believe the entire roof or a large portion of it will need to be replaced.

The next phase of the reconstruction process will continue this week with anticipated demolition of the four affected classrooms, and to start rebuilding them as soon as materials are available, according to the release.

The district’s goal is to have the building open for students by Sept. 2, but material availability may be a limiting factor with possible lead times for some products as long as eight weeks, officials said.

Country View Elementary School Principal Michelle Nummerdor will update parents and others interested in helping once crews get past the initial phase of recovery and get closer to the move in date, according to the release.
