MADISON, Wis. -

Two local healthcare groups finalized a deal that merges a hospital system with a physician group and health plan.

SSM Health Care and Dean Health Systems announced Tuesday that the merger became effective on Sept. 1 after all necessary regulatory approvals were received.

Shareholders from the two companies signed an agreement in April under which Dean and its subsidiaries would become part of SSM Health Care. Before becoming official, the deal required the approval of the Wisconsin Insurance Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and other regulatory agencies.

SSM Health Care president and CEO William P. Thompson said patients should not see any disruption in care on the Dean Clinic and Dean Health Plan side.

“Working closely now with the health plan to make sure all incentives are fully aligned between our organizations to focus solely on what’s in the best interest of the patient and to do what is clinically efficiently as possible,” said Thompson.

Thompson said they can’t guarantee every job but will try to minimize staffing changes and try to place those workers within the system if possible.

The two companies have worked together for 100 years, according to a news release.

St. Louis-based SSM Health Care owns St. Mary’s Hospital in Madison, St. Clare Hospital in Baraboo, St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital in Janesville, St. Mary’s Care Center in Madison and St. Clare Meadows Care Center in Baraboo.

Dean Health Systems is comprised of 60 clinics, Dean Health Plan, Davis Duehr Dean Eye Care, Dean Pharmacy and Navitus Health Solutions.
