Mikaela Shiffrin won the women's slalom event on Friday, becoming the youngest American to win an Olympic gold medal in alpine skiing.

The 18-year-old from Vail, Colo., took the event with a combined time of 1:44.54, enough to beat out Austria's Marlies Schild by 0.53 seconds. Kathrin Zettel, also of Austria, won the bronze medal.

Shiffrin made her Olympic debut three days ago in the giant slalom, finishing fifth in the event.

Julia Ford was the only other American to finish the slalom competition on Friday, ending up in 24th place overall.

Shiffrin's medal was the second gold in alpine skiing for the U.S. at the Sochi Games, following Ted Ligety's gold in the giant slalom earlier this week.

Shiffrin made her World Cup debut at age 15 in 2011 and later that year won the slalom title at the U.S. National Championships just after her 16th birthday, becoming the youngest American skier to claim a national alpine crown.

Slalom is Shiffrin's strongest event, as reflected by her status as the reigning World Cup and world champion. All of her seven World Cup wins have also come in the slalom.

American Megan McJames did not finish her first run, while teammate Resi Stiegler failed to finish her second run, eliminating both of them from the competition.
