Quardell Young scored 19 points and Eric Bryson added 17 as UW-Whitewater handed UW-Stevens Point its first loss of the men's basketball season with an 81-76 win in overtime at Kachel Gym in Whitewater Wednesday night.
The Warhawks had a 12-point halftime lead, 39-27, but the Pointers chipped away in the second half behind Randolph's Tyler Tillema who led Stevens Point with 19 points.
Tillema's three point basket gave Point a 68-64 lead with :31 left in regulation, but Whitewater's Young hit a layup with :13 left in the second half to force overtime.
In the overtime, the Pointers took a 76-75 lead on Joe Ritchay's jumper with 2:15 left, but the Warhawks' K.J. Evans hit four striaight free throws to put Whitewater back in front to seal the win.
Stevens Point, ranked number one in the country in Division Three, lost its first game of the season (20-1 overall, 11-1 WIAC). Whitewater, ranked seventh in the nation, is now 18-3 overall and 9-3 in the WIAC.
