Verona couldn't figure out Sammi Sullivan Thursday at Goodman Diamond. The Hortonville pitcher allowed just one run as the Polar Bears beat the Wildcats 5-1 in the WIAA Softball Division One Quarterfinals.
Verona just didn't look like themselves. Usually dominant, Emma Ray pitched well for the first couple innings. But in the third, the Polar Bears used a combination of timely hitting and Wildcat fielding errors to carve out a 3-0 lead.
In the sixth, the Wildcats cut the lead to 3-1 when Bea Kealy's bunt scored Bailey Buisker. Buisker appeared to leave the baseline on her way to home, but after a brief discussion, the umpires ruled her safe.
In the top of the seventh inning, Hortonville slammed the door. They loaded the bases with no one out and were able to score two runs to push their lead to 5-1. In the bottom of the frame, Sammi Sullivan allowed a base runner before recording the final three outs.
Sullivan pitched a complete game, giving up just one run and striking out two.
Verona finishes the season with a 22-3 record.
