Japanese teen Yuzuru Hanyu was golden in his first Olympics, winning the men's figure skating competition at the 2014 Winter Olympics on Friday.

Hanyu, 19, won the gold medal after his free skate performance with Patrick Chan of Canada taking silver and Denis Ten of Kazakhstan earning bronze.

American Jason Brown finished ninth in his Olympic debut. The 19-year-old has become well-known in Sochi for his ponytail and his "Riverdance" free skate program.

Fellow American Jeremy Abbott, the 28-year-old Colorado native who wowed the crowd with his short program Thursday after an early and seemingly catastrophic fall, finished 12th overall. Four years ago in Vancouver he finished ninth in his first Olympic Games.

Both Brown and Abbott won bronze medals over the weekend as part of the U.S. team in the inaugural team figure skating event.

Evgeni Plushenko, who was part of the gold-medal winning Russian team in the team figure skating competition, pulled out of the men's individual competition Thursday after injuring his back during warm-ups for the short program.

He already owned an Olympic gold and two silvers in the men's event coming into Sochi, and his total of four medals ties him with Sweden's Gillis Grafstrom for the most Olympic medals won by a figure skater.

Plushenko's withdrawal, and subsequent retirement from competitive skating, left host Russia without a competitor in the men's individual event.
