Floyd Mayweather retained his welterweight crown Saturday by beating scrappy Argentinian Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Mayweather remains unbeaten at 46-0, 26 KOs, while Maidana goes to 35-4, 31 KOs. The Associated Press reports that Mayweather landed nine more punches than Maidana despite only throwing half as many (425 to 858). However, the 221 punches Maidana landed against Mayweather were the most Mayweather has endured in his last 38 fights, according to ComuBox statistics.

Judge Michael Pernick scored it 114-114, a draw. Burt Clements had it 117-111 and Dave Moretti scored it 116-112 for Mayweather, according to the New York Times.

USA Today reported on a pre-fight controversy about Maidana’s gloves that spilled into post-fight blame. Mayweather and the Nevada Athletic Commission said Maidana couldn’t wear Everlast gloves because they did not have enough padding in the knuckle area. It was not settled until hours before the first round.

"If I had my gloves, I would've knocked him out," Maidana said. "He never hurt me with a punch. He wasn't even that tough.”

Mayweather had pre-fight drama of his own. Three weeks ago Mayweather announced he and his longtime fiancee, Chantel Jackson, had broken up shortly after Jackson, who was pregnant with his twins, “was no longer pregnant,” USA Today reported.

Maidana, 30, threw many looping punches and pinned Mayweather, 37, to the ropes in the early rounds, according to the New York Times. Mayweather chose his spots, getting in a couple of left hooks and straight shots to the body. But Maidana kept coming forward and smothering Mayweather. A cut opened above Mayweather’s right eye in the fourth round.

It was not until the middle of the fight that Mayweather started tagging Maidana with quick, stinging blows. In the ninth round, Mayweather struck Maidana with a straight right and then a short overhand right. Later in the round, Mayweather bounced off the ropes to pepper Maidana with a two-punch combination that staggered the Argentinian, the Times reported.

It took Mayweather all 12 rounds to earn his $32 million payday. The Associated Press said the fight was in doubt late as Maidana wouldn't quit coming forward. With the crowd on its feet in the final round, Maidana tried to land big punches but Mayweather was able to escape most of them.

Maidana said he wants a rematch, and both promoter Richard Schaefer and Mayweather said he might get one after nearly pulling off one of the biggest upsets in recent years, according to the Associated Press.

With his wins over Maidana Saturday and Mexico’s Saul Canelo Alvarez in September, Yahoo! Sports reports Mayweather has united the super welterweight and welterweight titles for both the World Boxing Association and World Boxing Council.
