HOUSTON -

Ryan Braun's return to the Milwaukee Brewers' roster might take longer than hoped.

The All-Star left fielder was back with the team Thursday in Houston after a visit to a hand specialist and said it "could be awhile" before he comes off the DL. He's out due to a nerve issue in his right thumb, and he'd be eligible to return Tuesday.

While declining to give specifics of what the specialist told him, Braun said, "It was nice to get clarity. There's comfort in knowing what we're dealing with. It's nothing we didn't expect."

Milwaukee manager Ron Roenicke conceded that Braun's absence could be an extended one.

"It's not a quick fix," Roenicke said. "We'll see what happens at the end of the DL. It sounds like he's going to have to swing (a bat) to see how it feels so he doesn't go backwards like he did when we put him on the DL.

"He may not get rid of it completely until the offseason."
