Jonathan Williams set career highs with 151 yards on 18 carries and helped cement the game with a 75-yard, third-quarter touchdown run to lead the host Razorbacks to a win over the Ragin' Cajuns in head coach Bret Bielema's debut.
Brandon Allen threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns, including a pair of scoring strikes to senior Javontee Herndon, in his second career start. Freshman Alex Collins added 131 yards on the ground for Arkansas, which totaled 292 rushing yards.
Terrance Broadway connected on eight of his first 11 pass attempts for Louisiana-Lafayette but was limited by a Razorbacks defense that sacked him four times. Broadway finished 15-of-28 passing for 171 yards and a touchdown but also lost a fumble and was intercepted.
Allen got the Razorbacks on the board right off the opening kickoff, leading Arkansas down the field on an 11-play, 75-yard drive, capped by a 6-yard touchdown pass to Herndon. The Ragin' Cajuns answered on the ensuing drive, ending in a 2-yard touchdown scamper from Alonzo Harris, but never established any offensive consistency.
After leaving the game late in the first half with an apparent arm injury, Williams returned in the third quarter and answered a Broadway-to-Jacob Maxwell touchdown pass that pulled Louisiana-Lafayette within 27-14 with a 75-yard gallop on the following play. Freshman tight end Hunter Henry led the Razorbacks with five receptions for 75 yards.
But during the game, an Arkansas athletic department employee injured a leg when a T-Shirt gun apparently malfunctioned during the first half.
School spokesman Kevin Trainor said a marketing department intern, whose name he declined to give, was injured and transported to Washington Regional Medical Center.
A loud explosion was heard from the southeast corner of Razorback Stadium while the Ragin' Cajuns were driving during the first quarter. Following the explosion, emergency medical personnel were seen responding to an injured patient who was taken from the field on a stretcher.
A police officer was seen afterward holding the T-Shirt gun, which is used to fire shirts into the crowd.
A hospital spokesperson was unable to release more information about the intern's condition without a name.
