New York Rangers center Derek Stepan had surgery to repair a broken jaw that he sustained following a hit by Montreal Canadiens left wing Brandon Prust during Thursday night's Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals.

Rangers coach Alain Vigneault made the announcement Friday.

Prust was not penalized for the first-period hit but was scheduled for a hearing with the league Friday. He also could be suspended.

Stepan had X-rays Thursday night, and he returned to the game after they were negative. He was in pain after the game and on Friday morning, according to the team. Montreal won the game 3-2 in overtime.

The jaw fracture was revealed after further tests were taken during a visit with a specialist.

Vigneault said Stepan's playing status for the remainder of the series will be determined by Saturday. Game 4 of the series is Sunday. The Rangers lead it 2-1.
