Sikh son first saw father at dad's funeral

Published On: Aug 01 2013 03:46:04 PM CDT
OAK CREEK, Wis. -

The first time 15-year-old Gurvinder Singh recalls seeing his father was in a coffin following last year's shooting rampage at a Wisconsin Sikh temple.

Ranjit Singh left his family in India in 1997, when his son was 7 months old, to work at the Sikh Temple of Wisconsin. He'd planned on finally visiting his family last October. But on Aug. 5., 2012, he and five other people were gunned down by a white supremacist at the temple.

With the anniversary approaching, Gurvinder is angry but using his father's memory as strength.

His family stayed in the U.S. after the funeral. Gurvinder just finished ninth grade and hopes to go to college. But most important, he says, is becoming such a person who reminds people of his father.
