Scammer targets church’s pastor

Published On: Mar 04 2014 11:24:55 AM CST

MADISON, Wis. -

A Madison pastor hopes other churches can avoid a scammer who tried to dupe him into sending him money.

The pastor at St. Bernard Catholic Church at 2450 Atwood Av. told police he got a call on Saturday from a man who claimed to be a member of the church. The man said he, his wife and two daughters were stranded in Oklahoma City after a holdup.

He asked for money to be wired.

The pastor said he checked the church records to see if the man was a member. The man hung up after the pastor asked for a home mailing address.
