MADISON, Wis. -

The group that helps homeless and needy families wants to move its shelter and other services of its East Washington facility over to its current offices on Darbo Drive about three miles away.

The Salvation Army would expand that building with a two-story addition and have more space for families in need.

Major Loren Carter said the costs of the East Washington building are outweighing its benefits.

“It is a tiered building; we put a lot of money into it just keeping life and safety issues addressed,” said Carter.

Carter also hopes the East Washington property in the 600 block can be sold quickly.

Money from the sale would be used to finance the Darbo Drive addition, which would likely start late next year or early 2015.
