Richard "Rich" Nowland, age 55, passed unexpectedly Monday, June 17, 2013.

He was born on January 30, 1958 in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the son of Donald "Don" Nowland and Sharon (Peck) Nowland. Rich was a 1976 graduate of Sauk Prairie High School and served in the United States Army from 1976 to 1999. After retiring from the Army, he joined Air Methods in Rockford, IL in 1999 as an EMS Helicopter Pilot, which later became OSF Aviation where he served as Rockford Lead Pilot.

Rich truly loved life and took every possible opportunity to live it to the fullest. A true adventurer, he and his wife Darlene traveled frequently domestically and to any tropical beach location they could get to. He took many pictures of his feet covered in sand with the clear blue ocean beyond as he lounged on the beaches. He spent most of his adult life flying helicopters in the Military and as a civilian medical flight pilot. He would try anything once and enjoyed zip lining, scuba diving, parasailing, hiking, and riding his Harley all over the country. He loved his family, friends, and the Green Bay Packers with great enthusiasm.

He is survived by his wife, of 23 years, Darlene (Sullivant) Nowland; his children Ivy Nowland, Melissa(Nowland)(Robert "Bob") Phillips , Dana Nowland, Nickolas "Nick" Nowland, Shane Henderson, Tenisa Henderson, Ranee Henderson; his parents Donald "Don" and Sharon (Peck) Nowland ; his grandmother Hazel Miller; his brother Rick Nowland (Vicie) Nowland; his brother Sidney Nowland; his sister Kelly Nowland; his brother Randy Nowland; his grandchildren Dimitri Phillips, Payten Phillips, Kaia Nowland Troia, Toby Gumpenberger, Cody Gumpenberger, Allexis Dansby, Daylon Dansby, and Elizabeth Henderson; seven nieces and nephews; and numerous friends and family members.

He is preceded by his grandfather Martin Miller; his sister Debbie Nowland.

Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. and a memorial service will be held immediately following the visitation at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2013 at Hooverson Funeral Homes 251 Water St., Sauk City, WI 53583.

A celebration service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at The Dorf Haus, 8931 Hwy. Y, Sauk City (Roxbury), WI 53583. The family suggests that visitors wear casual attire to reflect Rich's love of a laid back, "flip flops, shorts, and t-shirts", approach to life.
