MADISON-Richard G. “Dick” Thayer, age 83, of Madison, passed away on Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at Agrace HospiceCare.

He was born on March 20, 1930, in Madison, the son of George and Ruth (Barlow) Thayer. Dick graduated from Madison East High School in 1949. He then entered the U.S. Navy, where he proudly served for 22 years, including a tour of duty during the Korean War.

He was married to Carol Lange, whom preceded him in death in 1983. Dick then married Shirley Ann Nabholz on Aug. 10, 1986, in Madison. Dick and Shirley’s families were close friends growing up. He worked for the Federal Communication Commission for 18 years, retiring in 1988. Dick loved spending time with his family and always had treats handy for the neighborhood dogs. He was an avid Redskins and Packers fan (depending on if he was living in Maryland or Wisconsin at the time). Dick and Shirley enjoyed many vacations, especially their time spent in Hawaii, Alaska, and the frequent trips to visit family in Maryland. Dick had a great sense of humor and enjoyed giving and receiving gag gifts.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; children, Timothy, Robert, Thomas, Teresa (David) Brengle, and William (Missy); step-daughters, Kristy (Gordon) Meicher, Vicki Nabholz, Karen (Mark) Zimmerman, and Sharon (David) Lehrer; many grandchildren; many step-grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. In addition to his first wife, Carol, he was preceded in death by his parents; his stepson, Kenneth Nabholz; and his step-grandson, Brandon Zimmerman.

Funeral services will be held at GUNDERSON EAST FUNERAL HOME, 5203 Monona Drive, Madison, at Noon on Thursday, Aug. 29, 2013. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Thursday.

Memorials may be made to a Veteran’s charity of your choice or the Dane County Humane Society.

The family would like to thank Dr. Musa and staff, and Agrace HospiceCare for their compassionate care.
