Retiring lawmakers try to get redistricting reform passed

Published On: Feb 10 2014 06:08:36 PM CST

Two retiring lawmakers are making a last-ditch effort to get redistricting reform passed.

Sens. Tim Cullen, D-Janesville, and Dale Schultz, R-Richland Center, held a public meeting on the issue Monday.

They want to convince their colleagues the issue matters and that redistricting reform bills should be taken up.

In 2011, lawmakers redrew legislative districts that many argued gave an advantage to Republicans.

“It’s important to remind our colleagues and the public that we’re here to serve the public and that we all win when the process if fair,” Schutlz said.

Republican leadership in both houses say Assembly bill 185 and Senate bill 163 will not be taken up for hearings. The next round of redistricting would be in 2021 and 2022.
