Resolution would change when city can ask applicant’s criminal history
Madison leaders are preparing to introduce a resolution changing when an employer can ask about an applicant’s criminal history.
The resolution is called Ban the Box, and it would apply to city job applications.
Madison Mayor Paul Soglin, Alder Maurice Cheeks and representatives from the interfaith organization Moses made the announcement Wednesday morning.
Ban the Box would remove questions about criminal records from initial applications. The goal of the proposal is to break down barriers previous offenders face when entering the workforce.
“This is going to help achieve our goals of having a more diverse workforce; of having increased public safety by giving people the opportunity to step back into the workforce,” Cheeks said.
The resolution will be introduced Tuesday.
