MADISON, Wis. -

The University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics has been named the top hospital in Wisconsin for the second year in a row, according to a release.

U.S. News and World Report magazine also named UW Hospital and Clinics among the nation’s top 50 hospitals in nine medical specialties, which is two more than last year, according to the release.

UW Hospital and Clinics is nationally ranked in nephrology at No. 19, geriatrics at No. 27, pulmonology at No. 31, ear, nose and throat at No. 27, neurology and neurosurgery at No. 50, cancer at No. 47, gynecology at No. 50, gastroenterology/GI surgery at No. 50, and urology at No. 34, according to the release.

The magazine also named UW a high-performing hospital in cardiology and heart surgery; diabetes and endocrinology; orthopedics; and psychiatry, according to the release. High-performing hospitals must be in the top 25 percent within a given specialty.

“Being ranked as the state’s top hospital is a source of great pride for our staff and physicians,” Donna Katen-Bahensky, hospital president and CEO, said in the release. “It also reflects our commitment to patient- and family-centered care, a commitment that affects everything we do.”

Twelve of the 16 categories ranked are assessed based on a combination of data on patient safety, survival and staffing along with survey results from physicians, according to the release. Reputational scores are used for psychiatry, ophthalmology, rheumatology and rehabilitation.
