MILWAUKEE -

A report has cleared Milwaukee police officers involved in the 2012 arrest of a mentally ill man who later died.

The Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission released the report Monday.

The report says employees of a group home called police July 28 because they were having trouble with 30-year-old John Kriewaldt. When officers arrived, Kriewaldt slapped one of them in the forehead.

Police handcuffed Kriewaldt and placed him in the back of a squad car, where he banged his head on the metal divider. While paramedics were treating the cuts to Kriewaldt's head, he stopped breathing and died two days later.

The Journal Sentinel reports Fire and Police Commission Executive Director Michael Tobin wrote that the officers did not use excessive force and did not violate any department policies.
