Renewed search for girl missing since 1996

Published On: May 19 2013 01:38:51 AM CDT

SPOONER, Wis. -

Washburn County sheriff's officials said they consider the case of a 15-year-old girl missing for 17 years still open and active.

The Duluth News Tribune reported crews took part in a ground and water search in Washburn County on Thursday and Friday in the case of Sara Bushland.

She was last seen April 3, 1996, getting off the school bus at her home near Spooner.

According to a sheriff's office news release, crews searched property owned by Bushland's mother and stepfather with their consent and cooperation.

Sheriff Terry Dryden said he can't release much information on why and how the search came about because it's an ongoing criminal investigation.

The St. Louis County Rescue Squad and Superior-Douglas County Dive Team were among the agencies involved in the search.
