Poll shows Wis. residents still split on vouchers

Published On: May 14 2013 01:05:54 PM CDT

MILWAUKEE -

A Marquette University law school poll released Tuesday said 48 percent of respondents would like to see Wisconsin's voucher program expanded statewide or at least in larger districts with some underperforming schools. Forty-four percent want it frozen or ended altogether.

That's about the same as last month when 52 percent of respondents supported expansion, and 42 percent wanted vouchers frozen or ended.

Pollster Charles Franklin says that shows opinions aren't changing much even after strong discussion about the issue statewide.

The voucher program gives taxpayers subsidies to send their children to private school. It started in Milwaukee and expanded to Racine last year.

Gov. Scott Walker has proposed expanding it to nine more districts.

The poll questioned 717 respondents. The margin of error is plus or minus 4.4 percentage points.
