Poll: More residents report ‘poor’ personal finances

MADISON, Wis. -

For a fifth consecutive quarter, a poll has shown an increase in the number of Wisconsin residents who describe their personal financial situation as poor.

The result of the third quarter Wisconsin Economic Scorecard from WisBusiness.com shows 18 percent of respondents say their financial situation is poor, while 30 percent expect their situation to improve in the coming year.

Fifty-eight percent of respondents said they feel the state is heading in the right direction, and 30 percent give the current state economy positive marks.

One in four are very dissatisfied with the pace of job creation in the state, compared to just one in 20 who say they are very satisfied. Fifty-two percent expressed dissatisfaction with job growth while 48 percent said they are satisfied.

In the coming year, 34 percent of respondents expect the state’s economy to get better. Thirteen percent expect it to get worse.

The poll also asked residents about the iron ore mine proposed for northern Wisconsin. Fifty-one percent favor the mine while 35 percent oppose it.

Pollsters talked to 427 residents, and the poll was conducted over landlines and mobile phones from Sept. 23-26. The poll has a margin of error of 4.7 percent.
