Crash on Tiedeman Pond

FITCHBURG, Wis. -

A Janesville man was arrested after striking two people with his vehicle, leading a chase and launching onto a frozen pond, according to a release from Fitchburg police.

Police said an officer stopped a vehicle at the Mobil Gas Station at 2956 Fish Hatchery Road at 1:36 a.m. after checking the plates and finding an outstanding warrant. After the passenger got out, the driver put the vehicle in reverse and hit the officer and passenger, knocking them to the ground.

The driver, Shannon R. Patterson, 28, then rammed a squad car twice, police said. The rear bumper of Patterson's vehicle came off.

Police pursued Patterson as he fled west on the Beltline frontage road and hitting 90 miles per hour before his vehicle launched into Tiedeman Pond from Gammon Road, police said. The vehicle cleared a wooden walkway and rolled over multiple times on the ice.

Patterson was extricated and taken to a hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The officer and passenger who were struck were treated and released from a hospital.

Patterson was arrested on suspicion of operating while intoxicated causing injury, fleeing an officer, obstructing an officer, possession of drug paraphernalia, two count of reckless endangerment and on a parole violation.

Officers from Madison, town of Madison and Middleton assisted with the investigation.

The fire department had to remove a couple of sections of the walkway to get Patterson's vehicle off the ice, Middleton police said. The walkway was slightly damaged in the process, and barricades were put up delineating a section that is closed.
