MADISON, Wis. -

Police arrested a man who initially lied to officers, but was eventually tracked by a K-9 in connection to a church burglary Tuesday night, according to a release.

Gordon B. Sullivan, 24, of Madison, was out of breath and sweating when an officer stopped him a couple blocks away from Parkside Presbyterian Church at 4002 Lien Road shortly after crews responded to reports of a burglary, police said.

Sullivan initially told police he was walking around smoking weed just before 10 p.m., according to the release.

Police responding to the scene found a window air conditioner pushed in, a window open and a boom box on the ground just outside the window, officials said.

The officer that stopped Sullivan told him a police K-9 was on scene and could search for specific scents, but police would need an article of the suspect’s clothing, according to the release. Sullivan cooperated with the officer and gave up his shoe.

His shoe was taken to the scene where K-9 Slim used it to track the scent from the scene to the squad car Sullivan was in, police said. Sullivan then admitted he was behind the church smoking week, but was adamant that he was not the one responsible for the burglary.

Sullivan told police he was behind the church and bumped into an acquaintance that broke into the church, according to the release. The officer didn’t buy the story and Sullivan was arrested on tentative charges of burglary, criminal damage to property and for a parole violation.
