MADISON, Wis. -

An unlikely source of evidence helped police link a man to two separate crimes Tuesday night, according to a report from Madison police.

According to a report, officers were dispatched to separate calls; one a burglary, the other for shoplifting. The burglary and theft did not appear to be linked, until it was determined that hot dogs found in the suspect’s backpack likely came from the burglarized home.

Police were dispatched to 1312 S. Park St. after two four-packs of beer were allegedly stolen from a grocery store. The officer on the scene offered to give the 39-year-old suspect, who appeared to be intoxicated, a ride home. The man said he could be dropped off at a friend’s house on nearby Spruce Street. The house turned out to be a recently burglarized home.

The owner, a 39-year-old woman, recognized the suspect as someone who had visited her roommate in the past. He denied being there, but the hole left in a broken front-door window used to enter the home was similar in size to the suspect’s beer bottles, the release said.

The police searched the suspect's backpack and found a pack of hot dogs. The woman then discovered the package of hot dogs was missing from her fridge.

She described the missing hot dogs as mostly chicken and turkey. The man claimed his were beef, but they turned out to be the same kind the woman described.

The suspect was arrested on burglary, damage to property and retail theft charges.
