JANESVILLE, Wis. -

A man accused of killing his father in 1994 when he was just 10 years old is now suspected of attacking his mother in Rock County.

Janesville police charged Andrew Churchwell, 30, with numerous charges after he hurt himself following a domestic incident Monday.

The incident started just after 3:30 p.m. at a home in the 1900 block of Purvis Avenue.

According to police, Andrew Churchwell had beaten up his elderly mother when officers arrived at his house, and had threatened to harm himself and the officers.

Police said as officers got ready to try and rescue the mother, Churchwell came out the back door, jumped into his car and took off at a high rate of speed.

Churchwell lost control of his car on W. Memorial Drive west of the country club in a bean field north of the road, according to police. Police said Churchwell was pinned in the vehicle, unconscious and breathing when officers arrived.

Neighbors said they were aware of Churchwell’s troubled past, but they never saw him act violent.

“We’d visit across the street. The first time I met him he walked across the street and visited. I always thought he was nice. I had no problem with him,” said Bob McLellan, Churchwell’s neighbor for 5 years.

Police said Churchwell was admitted to Mercy Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Churchwell faces numerous charges, including battery, reckless driving, pot possession and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Churchwell was the youngest person ever accused of homicide in Rock County when his 45-year-old father was fatally shot. He was too young to either be waived into adult court or found delinquent. The court instead ruled he was a child in need of protective services.
