Officials said a Cambridge woman died in a head-on crash near Deerfield Saturday morning.
The woman has been identified as Courtney L. Weichmann, 24, according to a release. She died as a result of her injuries sustained in the crash.
The Cottage Grove Police Department said at 8:30 a.m., officers responded to Highway 12 near the intersection with Highway BN for a report of a traffic crash.
Weichmann was driving a van westbound when she crossed the center line, striking an eastbound dump truck, according to a news release. The dump truck came to rest in a cornfield northeast of the intersection. Traffic officials said the vehicles collided head-on.
The dump truck driver, a 58-year-old rural Cambridge man, suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from an area hospital.
Cottage Grove Police Chief Chris Hughes said the initial investigation reflects the dump truck driver took measures to void the collision.
"At this time, it has not been determined if the female driver was attempting a passing maneuver or if the driver deviated from her lane of travel," Hughes said. The chief added that the area where the crash happened is a no-passing zone.
Hughes said alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor in this crash.
The highway was closed for about four hours Saturday so officials could remove a large amount of debris and diesel fuel from the highway, police said. Traffic was rerouted around the stretch of Highway 12 but the road was reopened by 1:15 p.m.
Police did not release the names of the drivers so authorities could notify family. Police said the crash is still under investigation.
