MADISON, Wis. -

A family dinner in downtown Madison ended with a 28-year-old seriously injured after he was attacked outside a restaurant Saturday night, Madison police said.

A 23-year-old Madison woman’s father, brother and his girlfriend were out to dinner at a restaurant in the 20 block of North Pinckney Street, according to the release. When they left the restaurant around 6:40 p.m. two men approached them, and one tried hitting on the brother’s girlfriend.

The family tried to keep walking, but one of the men punched, kicked and kneed the brother, police said. He suffered a broken jaw, chipped teeth and a fractured finger.

During the attack, the second man allegedly made comments like, “How do you like spitting up blood?” according to the release. The 58-year-old father put the guy attacking his son in a bear hug in an attempt to stop the violence.

Bouncers at the restaurant where the family had just left were able to detain the man until police arrived, and the other man stayed at the scene, police said.

Daniel L. Barsch, 24, of Milwaukee, was arrested on tentative charges of substantial battery, battery and five counts of disorderly conduct. Kyle R. Bevilacqua, 24, of Madison, was arrested on tentative charges of five counts of disorderly conduct.
