Food stamps for pets are now available for struggling families in the U.S.

The charity called Pet Food Stamps is based in New York, but recently became available to anyone in the country, ABC News reported.

More than 45,000 pets have been signed up in two weeks.

It's not a government program but works just like food stamps, according to CBS News.

Families must be on food stamps already or considered low-income to qualify.

If approved, a family can receive discounted pet food each month from a retailer for a six-month period, according to the Pet Food Stamps website.

The group is currently running off private donations until it can obtain federal grants and funds, The Associated Press reported.

Shelters across the country are hoping the program will help keep animals off the streets and out of overcrowded shelters.
