Petition against officer involved in shooting delivered

MADISON, Wis. -

A petition requesting that the officer involved in a fatal shooting be kept off the streets was delivered to the Madison Police Department Friday.

Officer Steven Heimsness shot and killed Paul Heenan in November when he responded to a report of a home burglary.

More than 100,000 people signed the petition against Heimsness, and four people delivered it Friday.

Amelia Maurer, one of the deliverers, said Police Chief Noble Wray has declined to meet with her and others asking for Heimsness to be removed.

According to MPD spokesperson Joel DeSpain, Wray anticipated receiving the petition and wants to hear from citizens regarding the case.

“He has met in the past with those pushing the petition drive, and is willing to meet with them again after he reviews the petitions,” DeSpain said of Wray.

Maurer said she and other friends of Heenan have begun a second petition asking that an impartial body investigate the shooting.

Heimsness remains on paid administrative leave. He is currently the subject of three other internal investigations not involved in the Heenan shooting.
